She’s been the Club Manager for almost two years, but she’s worked at the same course for 10, but has been playing there since childhood. This week, Rebecca Smith tells us about a shift to 9-hole memberships, and why managing member expectations can sometime be tricky!

What golf course do you work at, what’s your role, and how long have you been there?
I am currently the Club Manager at Maungakiekie Golf Club. I have been employed at the club for over 10 years, starting initially as a Golf Shop Assistant, before progressing to Golf Manager and to Club Manager a year and a half ago.

What inspired you to pursue a career in golf, and how did you get started?
My parents taught me how to play golf at a young age at Maungakiekie and so I have been involved with the club most of my life. I studied Sports Management and Sports & Exercise Science at University whilst working part time in the Shop, and was lucky enough to be offered a full time role once I finished my degree.

What are the biggest challenges you face in managing a golf club?
The biggest challenges are meeting members expectations, finding willing volunteers, and managing external pressures from various sources.

What trends or changes do you see shaping the future of the golf industry?
I think golf has become a far more sociable game for those that are time poor, we’ve seen particular interest within our 9 hole membership recently. Lots of golfers are looking for the ‘fun’ aspect rather than the competitive nature of historic club events. Managing the difference in member expectations can be difficult at times.

What more can be done to inspire young females golfers to the game?
I think creating a safe, fun and welcoming environment with likeminded people is key. A lot more women are picking up the game and joining clubs which is great to see. Having that fun aspect for the younger generation is crucial to promote the enjoyment of the game.

If you weren’t working in golf, what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t working in golf, I’d be working in another sport, likely in major event management.

If you could play a round of golf with three people dead or alive, who would they be and why?
Lydia Ko
Tiger Woods
Jordan Speith
They are all incredible golfers and I’d love to witness that in person.

What’s your handicap?
11.3
